Apply for a funeral allowance for war victims

You can apply for a funeral benefit if a relative of a war victim has died.

Detailed description

Please note: The following information is based on the provisions of the Federal Social Security Act, which has since expired. Similar benefits are now provided under Book XIV of the Social Code (SGB XIV). We will be able to provide you with more detailed information on this shortly. Until then, please contact the office listed at the bottom of this page with any related concerns.

  • If a victim dies as a result of the injury, the person who arranged the transfer is entitled to reimbursement of the costs of repatriation. This reimbursement includes the necessary and reasonable costs of repatriation to the place of burial.
  • If a person with disabilities dies as a result of the injury, the costs of the funeral will be covered up to one-seventh of the reference amount applicable at the time of death according to Section 18 Paragraph 1 of the Social Code (SGB IV). The person who arranged the funeral is entitled to have the costs of the funeral covered.
If a disabled person entitled to a pension dies as a result of the injury, they are entitled to a funeral allowance of at least €2,063 (from 1 July 2022).
If a disabled person entitled to a pension dies without the death being a result of the injury, there is a claim to funeral benefits of up to €1,035 (from 1 July 2022).
From this amount, the funeral costs are paid first to the person who arranged the funeral. If there is any surplus, the spouse, registered civil partner, children, parents, stepparents, foster parents, grandchildren, grandparents, siblings, and siblings' children are entitled to receive the surplus, provided they were living with the deceased at the time of death. If there are no such beneficiaries, the surplus will not be paid out.
