Detailed description
If you are able to work but don't have enough money to live on, you can receive Citizen's Allowance (Grundsicherung für Arbeitsuchende). Citizen's Allowance secures your livelihood and enables you to participate in social and cultural life. At the same time, it supports you in your job search or further education. Children from low-income families can also receive Citizen's Allowance.
Citizen's Allowance is transferred to your account in advance each month. The amount of Citizen's Allowance you receive depends on your age, your living situation, your housing costs, your income and assets, and the people you live with.
In certain situations, you may receive more money. This applies, for example, to expectant mothers from the 13th week of pregnancy, single parents, people with disabilities, or those who require expensive nutrition for medical reasons.
The standard needs allowance is intended to cover your costs for food, clothing, personal care, electricity, internet, and everyday needs. The standard needs allowance includes an amount for savings. This means you must save for and purchase items yourself. You can receive additional money for certain purchases. For example, for the initial furnishing of your apartment or for pregnancy and childbirth.
In the first year of receiving benefits, your net rent and operating costs will also be covered. Starting in the second year, your rent will be covered if it is reasonable. Reasonable heating costs may also be covered. Further information can be found in the "Links" section.
You receive benefits for your children for "Education and Participation in Social and Cultural Life" (BuT). These include school trips, class excursions, lunch, school supplies, and tutoring. School supplies for school-age children up to 15 years of age are automatically included when you apply for Citizen's Allowance. Further information can be found in the "Links" section.
You can also receive contributions to your health and long-term care insurance.
If you receive citizen's allowance, you must help to get back on your feet as quickly as possible. If you violate the resulting obligations, miss appointments, or report without a valid reason, your citizen's allowance may be reduced or denied.
