Detailed description

If you have little or no income or assets, you can apply for citizen's allowance for one-time benefits in special circumstances. This doesn't matter whether you've previously received money from the job center or not.

Situations in which you may be entitled to one-off benefits include:

  • You are expecting a child and therefore need new equipment and clothing.
  • You need furniture or household appliances for the first time or have to buy new ones after a divorce.
  • You need orthopedic shoes or need to have them repaired.
  • You need to have therapeutic equipment or devices repaired.

In these and other cases, you can apply for either cash or non-cash benefits (vouchers) from the Jobcenter.

Information

Prerequisites

  • You are employable and are currently unable to support yourself financially, nor will you be able to do so in the next six months.
  • Payment of the one-off benefit is necessary
  • You use the one-off benefit exclusively for the stated reason, for example
    • the initial furnishing of your apartment,
    • the initial clothing and equipment for pregnancy and birth,
    • the purchase and repair of orthopaedic shoes,
    • the repair of therapeutic devices and equipment as well as the rental of therapeutic devices.

Documents required

  • ID card or passport
  • proof of income
  • if applicable:
    • Proof of assets
    • Lease agreement, proof of rent payment or house encumbrances
    • Maternity pass or medical certificate of the due date
    • Recipe
    • estimates

Please ask the job center responsible for you which documents you need to submit for your case.

Please note

The one-time benefits according to § 24 paragraph 3 sentence 1 number 1 and 2 SGB II are provided under the responsibility of the municipal authorities. The level of benefits can therefore vary from region to region.

Deadlines

Submit the application before making the purchases.

Procedure

  • You can contact your local job center by phone, email, or in person. There you will receive further information and an application form, if you need one. Alternatively, you can apply for benefits online using the digital application for citizen's allowance.
  • You fill out the application form or write a reasoned, informal application, depending on the requirements of your responsible job center.
  • You send the application to the job center and attach the necessary documents requested by the job center.
  • The Jobcenter will review your application. Documents from third parties (such as your landlord) may be required to determine whether you need one-off benefits. Ultimately, the authority will make a decision on a case-by-case basis. You will then receive a notification from the Jobcenter. There are three possible outcomes:
    • the application is approved,
    • the application is partially approved,
    • the application is rejected.
  • The Jobcenter will pay you the approved amount or send you the benefit in kind (voucher).

Processing time

It may take several weeks to process your application.

Fees

There are no costs associated with having an account.

If you don't have an account, you will receive a payment order for a cash payment (ZzV-Bar). This is a check. This will incur costs that will be deducted directly from the benefit you are entitled to. Since the costs for the payment order can vary, please contact your local Jobcenter for information. You can have the check paid out in cash. Payments are made exclusively through Postbank branches. ZzV-Bar is a payment method offered by Postbank AG, the use of which has been specifically agreed upon between the Federal Employment Agency and Postbank.

Legal remedies

If the job center rejects your application and/or you do not agree with the job center's decision, you can appeal the decision within one month.

Legal basis

Section 24 paragraph 3 sentence 1 of the second book of the Social Code (SGB II)
