Report a death

Has someone passed away? Learn how to report a death to the relevant authorities here.

Detailed description

If a person has died, you must report the death to the relevant authority.



You can entrust a funeral home with the death notification.

 

Information

Prerequisites

A person has died and

  • You lived with the deceased person in a domestic community,
  • the death occurred in your home,
  • You were present at the death or
  • You know that the person is deceased based on your own perception or direct reliable information (for example, because you found the person or because the police informed you),
    • It is not enough if you only know about the death through hearsay or rumors.
  • You are the owner or manager of the facility (hospital, retirement or nursing home or other facility) in which the death occurred,
  • You are investigating as an official authority (police, State Criminal Police Office) in the case of death or
  • As a funeral director, you are entrusted with the death and are registered with the Chamber of Crafts or the Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Documents required

Please submit the following documents of the deceased person with the death notification:

  • medical certificate of death
  • Proof of last residence (e.g. identity card, simple registration information, rental agreement, electricity bill or similar documents)
  • birth certificate
  • if applicable, marriage or civil partnership certificate of the last marriage or civil partnership
  • if applicable, proof of the dissolution of the last marriage or civil partnership,
  • If necessary, you will receive further required documents from the responsible authority

Please note

If the death occurred in a facility such as a hospital, retirement home or nursing home, you as the owner or manager of this facility must report the death in writing.

Deadlines



Report the death no later than the third working day following the death.

Procedure

  • You submit the death notification personally with all necessary documents to the responsible authority.
  • As an institution or funeral home, you submit the death notification in writing with all necessary documents to the responsible authority.
  • The responsible authority will examine the notification and request any missing documents from you.
  • The responsible authority enters the death in the death register.
  • You can obtain a death certificate from the relevant authority.
