Apply for rent/water/heating/energy debt takeover

Are you no longer able to pay your rent, water, heating, or energy bills and are therefore in debt? If you are at risk of losing your home, you can find help and support here.

Detailed description

If you can no longer pay your rent or your rental, water, heating or energy bills and fear you will lose your home as a result, you can get help. The staff at the responsible office will advise you and work with you to determine what assistance is available. The responsible office will support you so that you can stay in your home. To do this, the staff at the responsible office will talk to your landlord, the local court, or even bailiffs, for example. This can often prevent eviction from your apartment. If you have rent, water, heating or energy debts, the responsible office can, under certain conditions, also give you money to pay off your debts. This could be a loan that you have to repay later, or assistance that you do not have to repay.

Information

Prerequisites

  • You submit an application to the responsible authority to assume your rent, water, heating and/or energy debts.
  • You are employable.
  • You receive citizen's allowance to cover your rent, water and heating costs.
  • You owe a debt to your landlord or a water, heating, or energy utility company. The debt is not time-barred and must be paid, but your income is insufficient to cover all or part of it.
  • If the responsible authority takes over your debts, it is foreseeable that your tenancy can be maintained and secured in the long term.
  • Taking over your debts is necessary because your emergency cannot be averted otherwise and you face the risk of becoming homeless.

Documents required

All documents relating to the tenancy and income, for example

  • Rental agreement and current benefit notice from the benefit provider
  • Bank statements
  • Letters of demand, reminders and enforcement notices

Please note

There are no special features.

Deadlines

You can submit an application at any time; there is no deadline. However, it is important to observe the deadlines set by tenancy law and foreclosure proceedings. Therefore, you should contact the relevant authority as soon as possible—ideally as soon as you notice that you are having difficulties paying your rent, water, heating, and/or energy bills.

Procedure

  • You submit your application to the responsible authority and attach the necessary documents.
  • The responsible authority will review your application and contact you again if any documents or information are missing.
  • The responsible office will invite you to a personal interview.
  • The responsible authority will decide on your application and inform you of the result in writing.
