Prerequisites
The application can be submitted at the earliest six months before reaching the minimum age. The main residence of the applicant must be in Hamburg. The application can be made before the lessons at the driving school are completed. However, the new driver's license will only be issued after the lessons have been completed and the exams have been passed.
Documents required
The following documents must be available to apply:
- a valid identity card or an electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with current confirmation of registration
- the existing driver's license
- a biometric passport photo 35 x 45 millimeters (without headgear)
- a certificate of participation in a first aid training course (there are various providers, the LBV is not allowed to recommend any providers for competition law reasons.)
- a vision test (for classes A and B; e.g. by an optician)
- the appointment confirmation
Additionally for the extension classes C and D:
- an ophthalmological report according to Annex 6 FeV not older than two years
- a medical report according to Annex 5.1 FeV not older than one year
- a medical report according to Annex 5.2 FeV not older than one year (only Class D)
- a certificate of good conduct (class D only), which must be applied for at the responsible residents' registration office and is not older than three months

The LBV-Mitte and LBV-Nord driving license offices are responsible for applying for driving licenses.
Driver's licenses issued after January 19, 2013, are valid for a period of fifteen years. After expiration, a new license must be issued. This only affects the driver's license itself; the driving permit remains valid, except for registered expiration dates for C/D classes. Driver's licenses issued before January 19, 2013, must be exchanged by January 19, 2033 at the latest.
