North Driving License

Extend your driving license to include bus classes D, D1, DE or D1E

If you have a class B driving license, you can extend it to include driving license classes D, DE, D1 or D1E for buses.

Detailed description

If you already have a Class B (car) driver's license, you can upgrade it to include additional driving privileges. You can also upgrade to Class D, allowing you to drive buses.
With driving license classes D, DE, D1 and D1E you are allowed to drive the following vehicles:

  • D: Buses with more than 8 seats (without driver), without limitation of the number of seats or vehicle length, with trailer up to 750 kg GVW.
  • DE: Class D buses with trailers over 750 kg GVW.
  • D1: Buses with more than 8 but no more than 16 seats (excluding the driver) and a maximum length of 8 metres, with a trailer up to 750 kg GVW.
  • D1E: Class D1 buses with trailers over 750 kg GVW.

If you want to drive commercially with your bus driving license, you will also need a qualification as a professional driver.

Prerequisites

  • Her main residence is in Hamburg.
  • You have reached the minimum age of 24.
  • You have a class B driving license.

Documents required

  • valid identity card, electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with current registration confirmation
  • biometric passport photo (35x45 millimeters)
  • ophthalmological report according to Annex 6 of the Driving Licence Regulation (FeV), not older than 2 years
  • medical report according to Annex 5.1 FeV, not older than 1 year
  • medical report according to Annex 5.2 FeV, not older than 1 year
  • Certificate of good conduct (feature O for official purposes, applied for at the responsible residents' registration office)
  • valid EU card driving license
  • Proof of participation in a first aid training course
  • If the driving licence is to be used for commercial passenger transport: proof of professional driver qualification

Exceptions to the minimum age may apply in connection with professional driver qualifications. Further information is available during an on-site consultation.

Deadlines

You can submit your application no earlier than six months before reaching the minimum age.


The driving license is valid for 5 years. You should apply for an extension approximately 4-6 weeks before the expiration date.

Procedure

  • You choose a driving school and register.
  • Typically, you submit all the necessary documents for applying for your driver's license to the driving school. Your driving school will then take care of everything necessary and inform you about the next steps in your driver training.
  • Your driving license will usually be issued to you immediately after you pass the practical test.

Alternatively, you can submit the application yourself. To do so, please book an appointment.

  • On our website for booking appointments, select the category "Driver's License"
  • Book the appointment "Extension C/CE, D/DE + Application for driver card (optional) + Application for driver qualification certificate (optional)"
  • You will receive an email. Confirm your reservation using the link in the email.
  • Bring all necessary documents and the appointment confirmation with you to your appointment at the LBV.
  • Scan the QR code on your appointment confirmation using the scanner on site.
  • Take a seat in the waiting area. You will be called by your call number.
  • Your request will be processed on site.

Processing time

The process for your driver's license takes approximately 4-6 weeks. Processing usually takes place in parallel with your driving school training.

45.10 EUR - 73.70 EUR.


The exact amount depends on the driver's license class applied for and can only be determined on-site based on the complete documentation. This is based on the German Fee Schedule for Measures in Road Traffic (GebOSt).
