License plate reservation
If you only want to deregister your vehicle for a short time, you can reserve the old license plate for re-registration for up to one year. This can only be done with the State Office for Transport (LBV) for Hamburg license plates (with the HH symbol) and is subject to a fee. Reservations are possible immediately after deregistration.
Export abroad
If you plan to transport your vehicle abroad, we recommend deregistering it in Germany beforehand. You can find further information under "Links."
Journey after deregistration
After deregistration, the vehicle and the previously assigned license plates may be driven until the end of the deregistration date, provided the vehicle insurance covers the journey. This means that vehicles located in Hamburg can still be driven directly to their storage location in Hamburg or in a neighboring registration district.
Deregistration of a stolen vehicle
Only possible if the vehicle is registered in Hamburg. The license plate will be blocked for ten years, meaning it cannot be reissued. For this, you will need to file a theft report with the police.
Incomplete sales advertisement
If the information about the purchaser is incomplete or incorrect, the previous owner must submit a sworn statement regarding the sale to the LBV. This requires the owner to appear in person and present a valid ID card.
For legal entities, the affidavit is submitted by the authorized representative. Proof of authority to represent the legal entity must be provided.
The previous owner bears the costs at the end of the procedure.
The deregistration process can only be started three months after the vehicle has been sold.
Deadlines
no
Retroactive deregistration is not possible. Deregistration can only be completed upon submission of all required documents.
If you sold your vehicle without a purchase contract, you can only apply for deregistration after a period of four weeks.
