You can apply for a residence permit if you, as a foreign parent, want to move in with your German, minor child.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You have a valid passport or passport replacement.
  • If required for your entry: You have a visa.
  • Your child is a minor, single and has German citizenship.
  • You have custody of your child and want to exercise it
    • If you do not have custody of your child: You already live in a family relationship with the child in Germany.
  • There is no interest in deporting you.
  • Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany

Documents required

  • Valid passport or passport replacement
  • Current biometric photo
  • Visa, if required for entry
  • Your child’s birth certificate
  • Proof of custody, if applicable
  • If applicable, proof of family life
  • Current registration certificate

In individual cases, the responsible authority may request further documents from you.

There are no special features.

Deadlines

The residence permit should be applied for at the latest eight weeks before your valid visa or current residence permit expires or – if you are legally staying in Germany without a visa – within 90 days after entry.

Procedure

  • You make an appointment with the responsible authority.
  • You submit your application together with the necessary documents.
  • The responsible authority will examine your application.
  • If your application is approved, you will receive a residence permit. Your fingerprints may be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
  • If your application is rejected you will receive a rejection notice.

about 6 - 8 weeks.

Fees

100,00 EUR


Under certain circumstances, a fee reduction or fee exemption may be considered. Additional fees may be charged for issuing a residence permit in the form of an electronic residence permit (eAT), which can also be used as electronic proof of identity.
