Prerequisites

• You have a recognized and valid passport or passport replacement and - if required for entry - a valid visa.
• There is no interest in deporting you.
• Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
• The foreign person in Germany you wish to move to has a valid residence permit, settlement permit, EU long-term residence permit, EU Blue Card, ICT card or Mobile ICT card.
• You and your spouse or life partner are at least 18 years old.
• You can provide evidence of basic language skills, where required.
• Your spouse or life partner has sufficient health insurance coverage and financial resources to support you as a family.
• Your spouse or life partner has an apartment in Germany (rented or owned) that offers enough space for you as a family.

Documents required

• Valid passport
• Current biometric photo
• Visa, if required
• Residence permit of the person to whom the family is to be joined
• In the case of family reunification with a spouse:
  • international marriage certificate as an officially certified copy or
  • Marriage certificate in original language as an officially certified copy or
  • Marriage certificate in the original language and in German translation, checked for authenticity and correctness of content by the German diplomatic mission abroad
• In the case of family reunification with a life partner: partnership certificate
• If applicable, proof of basic German language skills (A1 certificate)
• Proof of health insurance coverage
• Proof of livelihood security
• Proof of living conditions (e.g. rental agreement or purchase agreement with information on the square meterage of the living space)

Procedure

• You make an appointment with the responsible authority.
• You appear at the appointment and submit your application along with the necessary documents.
• The responsible authority will examine your application and, if necessary, request any missing information or documents from you.
• If your application is approved, the responsible authority will commission an external agency to produce your electronic residence permit (eAT card).
• You will be informed when your eAT card is ready for collection. You must collect the eAT card in person.
