Detailed description

The marriage can take place in the registry office or outside the registry office.

Marriage is concluded when you declare before a registrar that you wish to enter into marriage. Witnesses may be appointed.

Information

Prerequisites

  • You must have registered the planned marriage with the registry office at the place of residence of one of the spouses.
  • If you are getting married in another registry office, you will need a certificate from the registry office at your place of residence confirming the registration and the examination of your capacity to marry.

Documents required

In good time before:

  • Registration of the marriage at the registry office of the main or secondary residence of one of the spouses.

On the day of the wedding:

  • Confirmation of the date from the registry office where the marriage is to take place,
  • Identity card or passport.

Please note

  • The marriage ceremony usually takes place at the registry office. You can inquire at your local registry office whether marriage ceremonies outside the registry office are also available and which locations are available. Appointments are also available on some Saturdays.
  • There is limited space for your guests at the registry offices. Please inquire in advance about the maximum number of visitors.
  • You are not allowed to release pigeons in front of Hamburg’s registry offices and town halls.
  • You are not allowed to throw rice or other food in or in front of Hamburg's registry offices and town halls.
  • Emergency marriage:
In the case of an acute life-threatening illness, your marriage can, under certain circumstances, be performed at very short notice in a hospital, a nursing home, or at home. The registry office at your place of residence is responsible for registering the marriage. Please contact your local registry office immediately by phone or email.

Deadlines

The marriage registration is valid for 6 months.

Procedure

  • You will arrive at the registry office on the day of the wedding approximately twenty minutes before the agreed time.
  • Your identification documents will be checked by a registry office employee before the wedding. If you have witnesses, maids of honor, or an interpreter present, their identification documents will also be checked.
  • An interpreter must be licensed.
  • The registrar will pick you up in the waiting area and lead you to the wedding room.
  • The registrar will ask you whether you wish to enter into marriage.
  • They say “I do” one after the other.
  • After saying “I do” you can exchange your rings.
  • After the marriage, you will receive back the documents you submitted when registering the marriage. You will also receive your marriage certificate.

Processing time

The marriage ceremony usually takes 20 - 30 minutes.
