Apply for a settlement permit for former Germans

Detailed description

If you have lost your German citizenship and would like to continue to live or return to Germany permanently, you can apply for a settlement permit.



The settlement permit is a permanent residence permit. It allows you to work and live anywhere in Germany, and there are usually no additional requirements.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You have lost your German citizenship.
  • At the time of losing your German citizenship, you had been habitually resident in Germany for five years without interruption.
  • Their livelihood is secure.
  • You have adequate health insurance coverage.
  • You have no criminal record.

Documents required

  • Proof of your stay in Germany (e.g. employment contracts, salary slips, rental agreements, receipts)
  • Certificate of loss of German citizenship

You must submit the documents in German. In individual cases, the responsible authority may request fewer or more documents from you.

Please note

If it is unclear whether you still hold German citizenship, this will first be checked. If it turns out that you still hold German citizenship, you should apply for a German identity card or passport.

Deadlines


  • You must apply for a settlement permit within 6 months of learning that you have lost your German citizenship.

  • The settlement permit is valid indefinitely. The card issued with it (eAT) is valid for 10 years and must then be updated.

Procedure

  • You use the online service to apply for a residence permit and upload the required documents. You note in the message/comments field that you are submitting your application as a former German citizen.
  • The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
  • Please bring all necessary documents, preferably in original, to the appointment.
  • The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
  • The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
  • If your application is approved, your fingerprints, signature and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
  • The responsible authority commissions an external agency, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
  • As soon as the eAT is ready, you will receive a notification and can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will schedule an appointment for you.
  • If the application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with the reasons for the rejection.

Processing time

Processing will begin immediately at the appointment if all documents are complete. The delivery time for the electronic residence permit from the Federal Printing Office is typically two to four weeks.

  • 56.50 EUR for minors

  • 113.00 EUR for adults

Legal remedies

An appeal against the negative decision can be lodged with the authority within one month of notification.
