Detailed description

If you take part in the European Voluntary Service, you have received a special residence permit that is valid for the agreed duration of your voluntary service. Under certain conditions, you can apply for an extension of this residence permit. A residence permit issued for participation in the European Voluntary Service can be extended for a maximum total period of one year.

Information

Prerequisites

  • You have a recognized and valid identity document (e.g. passport or passport substitute)
  • You are already completing a European Voluntary Service, the originally agreed duration of which was less than one year.
  • You have agreed with the host institution to extend your service for a maximum total period of one year.
  • There is no legally regulated reason for refusal (for example, you should not be one of the persons who enjoy international protection in Germany, who have applied for international protection, whose deportation is temporarily suspended or who have been granted temporary protection; nor should the institution receiving you have been founded solely for the purpose of facilitating the entry and residence of foreigners).
  • You have adequate health insurance coverage.
  • There is no interest in deporting you.
  • Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Documents required

  • Recognized and valid identity document (e.g. passport or passport substitute)
  • Original agreement with the host organisation to carry out the European Voluntary Service (with job description, details of the duration of the voluntary service, working hours, working conditions, supervision, remuneration and any training measures included)
  • written agreement on the extension of the European Voluntary Service
  • Proof of existing health insurance coverage
  • Before the age of 18: consent of the legal guardian

In individual cases, further documents may be requested from you

Please note

  • An extension of the residence permit beyond a total period of one year is not possible.
  • In addition to participating in the voluntary service, you may not undertake any additional employment.

Deadlines

You should submit your application at least 6-8 weeks before your original residence permit expires.

Procedure

  • Find out whether the office responsible for your application allows you to submit your application online or has a special application form. In Hamburg, the application can be submitted online.
  • You submit your application.
  • The responsible authority will examine your application and, if necessary, request any necessary documents or information from you.
  • The responsible office will contact you to arrange an appointment.
  • During the appointment, your identity and documents will be checked (please bring your documents, preferably in the original, with you to the appointment).
  • If your application is approved, your fingerprints will be taken to produce a new electronic residence permit (eAT card).
  • You pay the applicable fees.
  • The Federal Printing Office will be commissioned to produce your new eAT card.
  • Once completed, you will receive information and can collect the residence permit in the form of the eAT card in person.
  • If your application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice. In this case, you will also have to pay an administration fee

Processing time

You should expect processing to take 6-8 weeks. If you submit all the required documents in full and well prepared, processing may be quicker. After approval, it will then take another 4-6 weeks for the Federal Printing Office to produce your electronic residence permit.
