Apply for extension or change of residence permit for the purpose of education

Detailed description

If you have a residence permit for your training in Germany, it is limited in time. You must extend your residence permit or notify a change in your training in a timely manner if you wish to continue your training in Germany.


To do this, you must submit an application to the responsible authority.


With this residence permit, you may continue to live in Germany during your training and – depending on the type of training – also work to a certain extent.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • Your home country is not a member of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA)
  • You continue your training or change your training
  • Your livelihood is secured for the duration of your stay. This means you have enough of your own money to cover your living expenses and rent.
  • You have valid health insurance.

Further requirements may apply in your case. The responsible authority will inform you about these.

Documents required

  • valid passport or passport replacement of your country of origin
  • biometric passport photo in electronic form
    • You can have your passport photo taken on-site. A photo booth is available.
    • You can have a passport photo taken by a certified photographer or participating drugstores. This photo will be made available electronically to the responsible authority via a cloud service.
  • Proof of a training, study or internship placement (e.g. training or internship contract, enrollment certificate, university admission letter)
  • Proof of secure livelihood (e.g. bank statements, declaration of commitment, employment contract)
  • Proof of existing health insurance (e.g. insurance certificate)

Additional documents may be required in your case. The responsible authority will inform you accordingly.

Please note

You can extend or change this residence permit for various reasons:

  • for the recognition of professional qualifications during employment
  • for the purpose of in-company training and further education
  • for the purpose of vocational training
  • for study preparation and study
  • for conditional admission to study and part-time study
  • to continue a course of study begun in another EU country
  • to carry out a qualification measure
  • to carry out a qualification measure with employment
  • for the recognition of professional qualifications based on an agreement of the Federal Employment Agency
  • to take an examination for the recognition of a foreign professional qualification
  • for a study-related internship EU
  • to participate in language courses and student exchanges
  • for general education school attendance
  • to find a training place to carry out qualified vocational training
  • for applying for a course

Deadlines

Submit your application in good time – approximately 8 weeks before your residence permit expires.

Procedure

  • You use the online service to apply for an extension or change of your residence permit and to upload the necessary documents.
  • The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
  • Please bring all required documents, preferably in original, to the appointment.
  • The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
  • The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
  • You pay the necessary fees.
  • If your application is approved, your fingerprints and signature will be taken, and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
  • The responsible authority commissions an external agency, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
  • Once the eAT is ready, you can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will schedule an appointment for you.
  • If your application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice stating the reasons for the rejection.

Processing time

Processing will take place directly at the appointment if all documents are complete.


The delivery time for the electronic residence permit from the Federal Printing Office is usually 2 - 4 weeks.

Fees

93.00 EUR, for minors: 46.50 EUR
