Your new driver's license will generally be delivered to you by registered mail. In exceptional cases, you may need to collect it yourself.

Detailed description

The new driver's license will usually be delivered to you by registered mail through the Federal Printing Office. In exceptional cases, delivery may not be possible. In this case, you must pick up the new driver's license from the office where you applied for it. You may be required to hand over your old driver's license when collecting it.



A general collection takes place for foreign driving licenses.

Documents required

  • a valid identity card or an electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with a current confirmation of registration
  • If applicable: existing driving license
  • if available: a test certificate issued by the TÃœV confirming that the driving test has been passed

You can have your driver's license picked up by an authorized person. In this case, you will need a copy of your ID card, the applicant's power of attorney, and, if applicable, your old driver's license.

Procedure

  • You can pick up your new driver's license without an appointment in the morning hours from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • An appointment is necessary for the afternoon hours:
    • On our website for booking appointments, select the category Driving Licence
    • Book an appointment to pick up an ordered EU card driving license
    • You will receive an email. Confirm your reserved appointment using the link in the email.

Processing time

The delivery by registered mail or collection in individual cases usually takes place approximately 3 - 4 weeks after the application has been submitted.
