Detailed description
If you require a residence permit to stay in Germany, this residence permit will always be issued as an electronic residence permit (eAT). The eAT is a check card containing your personal details and information about your residence status. This data is printed on the eAT and also stored on a chip (electronic storage medium) within the eAT. With the eAT, you can use the online ID function on the internet.
How long your eAT is valid depends on how long your residence status or national passport is still valid. In most cases, your residence permit or national passport and your eAT expire at the same time. You will then need to apply for an extension of your residence permit, for example, in order to obtain a new eAT.
Even if you have a permanent residence permit, your eAT must be renewed regularly. In this case—or if your eAT is lost—you must apply for a new eAT to continue to prove your existing residence status.
Please note that from 1 May 2025 there will be new regulations regarding the required photo:
From this date, you will no longer be permitted to submit paper-based photos. Instead, you will need an electronic photo. You can create this on-site or bring the QR code provided by a photographer. Further information can be found in the "Links" section.
