Apply for an electronic residence permit

If you are not a German citizen, you may need an electronic residence permit (eAT) as proof of your residence status. Further information can be found here.

Use Online-Service

Detailed description

If you require a residence permit to stay in Germany, this residence permit will always be issued as an electronic residence permit (eAT). The eAT is a check card containing your personal details and information about your residence status. This data is printed on the eAT and also stored on a chip (electronic storage medium) within the eAT. With the eAT, you can use the online ID function on the internet.

How long your eAT is valid depends on how long your residence status or national passport is still valid. In most cases, your residence permit or national passport and your eAT expire at the same time. You will then need to apply for an extension of your residence permit, for example, in order to obtain a new eAT.

Even if you have a permanent residence permit, your eAT must be renewed regularly. In this case—or if your eAT is lost—you must apply for a new eAT to continue to prove your existing residence status.

Please note that from 1 May 2025 there will be new regulations regarding the required photo:

From this date, you will no longer be permitted to submit paper-based photos. Instead, you will need an electronic photo. You can create this on-site or bring the QR code provided by a photographer. Further information can be found in the "Links" section.

Information

Prerequisites

  • You are resident in Germany.
  • Your residence status is secured.

What other requirements you must meet depend on the type of residence permit you have. The responsible authority will provide you with further information. You can also check this yourself using the online service provided.

Documents required

  • valid national passport, passport substitute or ID card substitute
  • Biometric passport photo in electronic form
    • You will receive a QR code, which the photo studio will give you when creating your electronic passport photo
    • You can also take a passport photo on-site. A photo booth is available.
  • If available: current residence permit
  • If applicable: current benefit notice from the job center or social welfare provider

Please note

With the eAT, you can use the online ID function on the internet. If your eAT is lost or stolen, you should have the online ID function of your eAT blocked. You can do this at the responsible customer service center or by calling the blocking hotline 24/7 at 116 116.

Deadlines

You should apply for your new eAT at least four months before your current document expires. If you have lost your eAT, you must apply for a new one immediately.

Procedure

  • If your eAT card has been stolen, report this crime to the police.

Regardless of whether you are applying for an eAT for the first time or whether you need a new eAT because your current card has expired, been lost or stolen, the further procedure remains the same:

  • You use the provided online service to apply for a residence permit and upload the required documents.
  • The responsible authority will examine your application and, if necessary, ask you to submit further documents or information.
  • The responsible office will then send you an appointment for a personal interview.
  • Please bring all necessary documents, preferably in original, to the appointment.
  • The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
  • The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
  • If your application for a residence permit is approved, your fingerprints, signature and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the eAT.
  • You pay the fee
  • The responsible office will commission an external agency, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT. At the same time, you will receive an appointment to pick up your eAT.
  • Once your eAT is ready, pick it up at the scheduled appointment time from the responsible office where you submitted your application.

Processing time

Processing time is approximately 4-8 weeks. Depending on the volume of work at Bundesdruckerei, it may take longer for the final issuance of the electronic residence permit.
