Prerequisites

• The vehicle is registered in Hamburg and has a Hamburg license plate.
• The license plates are preserved to such an extent that they can be clearly identified.

Documents required

• the old license plates
• Registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document)
• Original inspection certificate of the HU
• the new license plates with the same license plate
• Informal, written declaration in case of loss or damage of the stickers

Additionally, when applying by proxy:

• legibly completed power of attorney of the registered owner in the original
• Original ID of the representative
• A legible color copy of the vehicle owner's ID card. This should be marked "COPY"
• Authorization of the representative if it is a company vehicle

Please note

• The front license plate bears the registration sticker with the Hamburg coat of arms. The rear plate bears the registration sticker and the general inspection sticker.
• A new license plate must be issued in the following cases:
  • in case of loss or theft of one or both license plates (for further information, see the article of the same name)
  • for foreign license plates registered in Hamburg (re-registration to a Hamburg license plate required)
  • if the license plate is no longer identifiable

Deadlines

If damaged, license plates must be replaced as quickly as possible.

Procedure

• Book an appointment online.
  • On our website, select the category "Vehicle Registration"
  • Then book "Re-stamping of license plates"
  • You will receive an email. Confirm your reservation using the link in the email.
• Bring all necessary documents and the appointment confirmation with you to your appointment at the LBV.
• Scan the QR code on your appointment confirmation using the scanner on site.
• Take a seat in the waiting area. You will be called by your call number.
• Your request is being processed.

Processing time

Your request will be dealt with directly on site.

Fees

The fee for re-stamping is EUR 5.10. In addition, there are costs for new license plates. The fee is based on the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt).
