Prerequisites

• Your vehicle is registered in Hamburg.
• It has a valid general inspection (HU).

Documents required

• valid identity card, alternatively passport with current registration confirmation
• Registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document)
• Registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document)
• Proof of a valid general inspection (HU)
• In case of loss : A declaration under oath is required. Please note the information under "Please note".
• In case of theft: theft report that you have previously filed with the police
• the remaining license plate if only one has been lost
• Appointment confirmation

Additionally, when applying by proxy (only possible in case of theft):

• A legibly completed original power of attorney with a legible color copy of the principal's ID card. Note: The color copy must be marked "COPY."
• Original ID of the authorized representative

Additionally for companies or associations:

• Company/association certificate (for example, a commercial register extract or an association register extract)
• Power of attorney with a legible color copy of the authorized representative’s ID card according to the company/association register
• Original ID of the authorized representative

Please note

• Affidavit in case of loss: Typically, you must provide a sworn statement (subject to a fee). You must appear in person at the appointment for this. Therefore, representation by power of attorney is not possible in the event of a lost license plate.
• Reporting theft: If your license plates have been stolen, you must first file a report with the police and present it at your appointment at the LBV.

Deadlines

Stolen or lost license plates must be replaced as soon as possible.

Procedure

• Book an appointment online.
  • On our website, select the category "Vehicle Registration"
  • Then book "Application for new license plates after theft or loss"
  • You will receive an email. Confirm your reservation using the link in the email.
• Bring all necessary documents and the appointment confirmation with you to your appointment at the LBV.
• Scan the QR code on your appointment confirmation using the scanner on site.
• Take a seat in the waiting area. You will be called by your call number.
• Your request is being processed.

Processing time

Your request will be dealt with directly on site.

Fees

The fees range from EUR 26.60 to EUR 70.00. In addition, there are costs for stamping new plates. A fee of EUR 30.70 may also be charged for the affidavit. The exact fee amount can only be determined after reviewing all the documents. The fee amount is based on the Fee Schedule for Measures in Road Traffic (GebOSt).
