Prerequisites

• You are at least 16 years old.
  • If you are under 16 years of age, a person with parental responsibility must authorize you to submit the application or submit the application jointly with you.
• You have held a valid residence permit for family or humanitarian reasons for at least 5 years without interruption and can prove that you have resided in Germany.
  • A settlement permit can also be granted if you reach the five-year limit after reaching adulthood. However, your residence permit must have been issued while you were a minor.
• There is no interest in deporting you.
• You have not been sentenced to a youth sentence of at least six months, a prison sentence of at least three months, or a fine of at least 90 daily rates for a crime within the last three years. You have also not been sentenced to a youth sentence and then suspended.
• You have knowledge of the German language at level B1.
  • This is assumed if you have attended a German-speaking school for more than 4 years and have achieved at least a 鈥渟ufficient鈥� (grade 4) in the subject of German.
• Their livelihood is secured, for example through
  • own income,
  • the income of the parents or
  • a training relationship that leads to a recognized school or vocational qualification or a university degree.

Documents required

• Valid passport or passport replacement
• Biometric passport photo in electronic form
• You can have your passport photo taken on-site. A photo booth is available.
• Proof of at least five years of residence in Germany (e.g. school, training or university certificates, proof of passing intermediate examinations or credit points, employment contract)
• If applicable: Written authorization from the absent parent with custody

If you are already of legal age at the time of application, additionally:

• Proof of sufficient language skills at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
• Proof of securing your livelihood including health insurance (e.g. proof of income, health insurance certificate) or proof of school or vocational training (school certificate, training contract or certificate from the training provider, enrollment certificate)

You must submit the documents in German. In individual cases, the responsible authority may require less or more documentation from you.

Submit your application no later than 8 weeks before your current residence permit expires.




The settlement permit is valid indefinitely. The card issued with it (eAT) is valid for 10 years and must then be updated.

Procedure

• You use the online service to apply for a permanent residence permit and upload the required documents.
• The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
• Please bring all necessary documents, preferably in original, to the appointment.
• The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
• The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
• If your application is approved, your fingerprints, signature and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
• The responsible authority commissions an external agency, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
• As soon as the eAT is ready, you will receive a notification and can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will schedule an appointment for you.
• If the application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with the reasons for the rejection.

Processing time

Processing will begin immediately at the appointment if all documents are complete. The delivery time for the electronic residence permit from the Federal Printing Office is typically two to four weeks.
