Apply for an extension of your residence permit to work in Germany at the Hamburg Service

Detailed description

If you have a residence permit because you work in Germany, it is temporary. If you would like to extend your residence permit, you must submit an application to the relevant authority.


Which office in ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú responsible for your application depends on your case.


The Hamburg Service is responsible for individuals who are not qualified professionals. These include:

  • People who work as au pairs
  • Persons employed as specialty chefs,
  • People employed as language teachers
  • People participating in the Federal Voluntary Service or the European Voluntary Service
  • People looking for a job after completing vocational training at school or in a company
  • People seeking employment with a recognized foreign vocational qualification
  • Self-employed persons and freelancers
  • Self-employed persons who have already been recognized as refugees (or similar) in another EU country
  • Self-employed former scientists and researchers
 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You belong to the group of people entitled to benefits.

Further requirements depend on the specific circumstances and the reason for your stay. The responsible authority will provide you with detailed information.

Documents required

  • valid passport or passport replacement of your country of origin
  • biometric passport photo in electronic form
    • You can have your passport photo taken on-site. A photo booth is available.
    • You can have a passport photo taken by a certified photographer or participating drugstores. This photo will be made available electronically to the responsible authority via a cloud service.
  • Proof of your employment (e.g. employment contract, the last three pay slips)

You may be required to submit additional documents. You'll learn more when completing the online service or from the relevant office.

The Office for Migration of the Department of Home Affairs and Sport (BIS) is responsible for:

  • Qualified persons with a temporary suspension of residence

The Hamburg Welcome Center for Professionals (HWCP) is responsible for:

  • Skilled workers with completed vocational training or a university degree
  • People who want to conduct research and/or are already recognized as refugees (or similar) in another EU country
  • Mobile researchers

Deadlines

Submit your application in good time – approximately 8 weeks before your residence permit expires.

Procedure

  • You use the provided online service to apply for the extension of your residence permit and upload the required documents.
  • The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
  • Please bring all required documents, preferably in original, to the appointment.
  • The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
  • The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
  • You pay the necessary fees.
  • If your application is approved, your fingerprints, signature and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
  • The responsible authority commissions an external agency, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
  • Once the eAT is ready, you can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will schedule an appointment for you.
  • If your application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with the reasons for the rejection.

Processing time

Processing will take place directly at the appointment if all documents are complete.


The delivery time for the electronic residence permit from the Federal Printing Office is usually 2 - 4 weeks.

Fees

96.00 EUR for a further stay of up to 3 months


93.00 EUR for a further stay of more than 3 months


Certain groups of people may be exempt from the fee. The responsible authority can provide further information.

Depending on the individual circumstances of the case, you must submit your application in Hamburg to the Hamburg Service location responsible for your place of residence, to the Hamburg Welcome Center for Professionals (HWCP) or to the Office for Migration of the Ministry of the Interior and Sport (BIS).

Mon 8am-12pm, 1pm-4pm, Tue 7am-12.30pm, Wed 8am-12pm, 1pm-4pm, Thu 1.30pm-7pm, Fri 8am-1pm, Visits are by appointment only. You can book an appointment online (https://www.ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú/go/17584).

The main entrance to Harburger Rathausforum 3 is located at the rear of the building and can be reached via the inner courtyard of the building complex. To get to the inner courtyard, use the entrance on Knoopstrasse. The mailbox is located at Harburger Rathausplatz 1 (town hall). There are no customer parking spaces available.

If you would like to apply for an electronic residence permit (eAT), you can use an existing self-recording terminal (Speed Capture Terminal) to capture the necessary biometric data (photo, signature, fingerprints).


Please allow a few minutes more time before your appointment to collect your data.


Note: You will not receive a printout of the digital photo.


There is no need to bring a passport photo with you when using the self-registration terminal.


Use costs 6 euros.
