Apply for a residence permit for long-term residents in another EU country

Detailed description

If you have long-term residency rights in another country of the European Union (EU country), you can obtain a residence permit.


You are entitled to long-term residence if you hold a residence permit in another EU country marked "Daueraufenthalt-EG" or "Daueraufenthalt-EU" (if applicable, in the national language). This residence permit allows you to stay and work in Germany for a specific period of time.

Prerequisites

  • You have long-term residency rights in another country of the European Union.
  • You would like to stay in Germany for longer than 3 months.

Documents required

  • valid passport or passport replacement of your country of origin
  • biometric passport photo in electronic form
    • You can have your passport photo taken on-site. A photo booth is available.
    • You can have a passport photo taken by a certified photographer, who will then make it available electronically to the relevant authority via a cloud.

You may be required to provide additional documents.

Please note

Your residence permit may contain restrictions or conditions for the first 12 months. These may, for example, include certain restrictions on your permission to work in Germany.

Deadlines

Submit your application within 90 days of entering Germany.

Procedure

  • You use the provided online service to apply for a residence permit and upload the required documents.
  • The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
  • Please bring all required documents, preferably in original, to the appointment.
  • The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
  • The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
  • You pay the necessary fees.
  • If your application is approved, your fingerprints, signature and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
  • The responsible authority commissions an external agency, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
  • Once the eAT is ready, you can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will schedule an appointment for you.
  • If your application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice stating the reasons for the rejection.

Processing time

If all documents are complete, processing will begin immediately at the appointment.


The delivery time for the electronic residence permit from the Federal Printing Office is usually 2 to 4 weeks.
