Detailed description

All identity cards issued since November 2019 have an integrated chip with the digital electronic identity verification (eID) function. This function also allows you to confirm your identity online (online ID function).



The following data is stored on the chip:

  • passport photo
  • First and Last Name
  • if applicable, religious or artistic name
  • birth date
  • Address
  • nationality
  • End of validity of the ID card
  • Issuing authority
  • Serial number
  • Access number
  • fingerprints

Since 2017, ID cards for persons 16 and older have generally only been issued with an activated eID. For persons under 16, the eID is deactivated by default. Later activation is possible.

You can view the data stored on the chip in your ID card. In Hamburg, you must make an appointment in person at a Hamburg Service location of your choice and bring your ID card with you.



If the online ID function of your ID card is activated and it is lost or stolen, there is a risk that someone will attempt to misuse this digital function. You should immediately contact the blocking hotline at 116 116. You can have the block lifted at any time. The ID card with online ID functionality is prepared for electronic signatures. However, you can only use this feature if you purchase a signature certificate from a certified provider and store it on the ID card.

Procedure

  • You check whether the online ID function of your identity card is activated.
  • If the function is not yet activated, make an appointment with your identity card authority.
  • Please bring your identity card and, if available, your PIN letter with you to the appointment.
  • The authority will verify your identity and, if necessary, activate the online ID function for you.
  • You will receive your PIN, which you can use to access the online ID function.
  • You install the AusweisApp on your computer or smartphone to use the digital function.
  • To use the online ID function, place your ID card on a reader or hold it against an NFC-enabled mobile phone.
  • If you would like to view the data on your electronic identity card, please make an appointment with the responsible office and bring your identity card with you.
  • If your ID card is lost or stolen, call the blocking hotline 116 116 immediately.
  • You state your blocking password so that the online ID function is blocked immediately.
  • If you would like to remove the block, please contact your identity card authority, which can lift the block. If necessary, you will receive a new PIN so you can use the online ID function again.
