Detailed description

If you are a British national or a family member of a British national and have been living in Germany since Brexit, and thus claim rights under the Withdrawal Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom, you may have acquired a permanent right of residence.


To document this right of permanent residence, you can be issued a "Permanent Residence Document-GB".


This certificate proves that you have the right to permanent residence.

Information

Prerequisites

  • You already possess a residence permit-GB.
  • They have a permanent right of residence in Germany due to the withdrawal agreement between the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU).

Documents required

  • valid passport
  • current residence permit-GB
  • biometric passport photo in electronic form
    • You can have a passport photo taken on site. A photo booth is available.
    • You can have a passport photo taken at a certified photo studio. The photo studio will then provide the photo electronically to the relevant authority via a cloud service.
  • Proof of your permanent right of residence (for example, registration certificate, employment contract, business license, benefit notice)

You may be required to submit further documents. You can find out more when completing the online service or directly from the responsible authority.

Please note

Under the following conditions, you may have acquired a permanent right of residence based on the withdrawal agreement:

  • They are British citizens or are family members of a British citizen.
  • They were already in Germany before December 31, 2020.
  • They have resided permanently and legally in Germany for at least 5 years.
  • Creditable periods of stay before and after 31.2020 will be added together.
  • A stay is lawful if, for example, you:
    • are employed, self-employed or freelancers or
    • if you are not employed, have sufficient means of subsistence and adequate health insurance coverage.
  • Further information can be obtained from the relevant authority.

Procedure

  • They use the provided online service to apply for the extension and upload the required documents.
  • The relevant authority will then send you an appointment for a consultation.
  • Please bring all necessary documents, preferably in original form, to the appointment.
  • The relevant authority will verify your identity and documents.
  • The responsible authority will involve other authorities if necessary.
  • You pay the necessary fees.
  • If your application is approved, your fingerprints, signature and a biometric photo will be taken for the production of your residence permit-GB.
  • The responsible authority commissions an external agency, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your residence permit-GB, which is issued in credit card format.
  • Once your residence permit (GB) is ready, you can collect it in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will contact you to schedule an appointment.
  • If your application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice stating the reasons for the rejection.

Processing time

Processing takes place directly during the appointment, provided all documents are complete. The delivery time from the Federal Printing Office for the electronic residence permit is then typically 2 to 4 weeks.

Fees

For persons under 24 years of age: EUR 22.80


For persons aged 24 and over: EUR 37.00


In certain cases, the fee may be reduced or waived entirely.
