If you, as a person of foreign origin, lose your national passport in Germany, you must immediately take certain steps to secure your residence status and ensure the renewal of your documents.

Detailed description

If you lose your national passport, it is important to take immediate action to avoid any potential impact on your residence status. You must report the loss of your national passport to the relevant authorities. This is necessary to apply for a new national passport or a temporary document. This also ensures that your stay in Germany continues to be properly regulated.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You have lost your national passport.
  • You appear in person at the relevant authorities.

Documents required

  • Existing identification documents, preferably with a photo (e.g. identity card or other documents to establish your identity)
  • current biometric passport photo in electronic form
    • As of May 1, 2025, you are no longer permitted to submit paper-based photos. The photo must be provided digitally. You must have the photo taken on-site; a photo booth is available.
  • In case of theft, the theft report from the police

Deadlines

You must report the loss immediately and take the necessary steps to reissue it.

Procedure

  • You report the theft or loss of your national passport to the police and have a theft report filed.
  • You should inform the relevant immigration authority about the loss of your national passport. There, you will receive a certificate of lost identity documents, which is often required by the embassy or consulate. Upon request, this certificate can also be issued with a passport photo.
  • You should contact the embassy or consulate of your home country in Germany. They are responsible for issuing a replacement passport or a temporary travel document.
  • After you have received your new passport, visit the immigration office again to apply for a new residence permit.

Processing time

Your registration will be processed immediately. Please allow several weeks for the issuance of a new national passport. Your home embassy can provide you with more detailed information on processing times.
