Acquire German citizenship by declaration

If you belong to a certain group of people, you can acquire German citizenship by making a declaration.

Detailed description

If you were not automatically granted German citizenship at birth due to previous gender-discriminatory laws, you can make a declaration and subsequently obtain German citizenship. This also applies to your children.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You were born after 23.05.1949
  • You belong to one of the following groups of people:
  1. You were born before January 1, 1975. Your mother was a German citizen on the day you were born. Your father was not a German citizen on the day you were born. Your parents married before the day you were born.
  2. You were born before July 1, 1993. Your mother was not a German citizen on the day you were born. Your father was a German citizen on the day you were born. Your parents were not married before July 1, 1998. Your father acknowledged his paternity or proceedings to establish paternity were initiated before you turned 23 years old.
  3. Your mother lost her German citizenship by marrying a foreigner before April 1, 1953. Your father was not a German citizen on the day you were born. You were born after your mother lost her German citizenship.
  4. You were born before April 1, 1953. Your mother was a German citizen on the day you were born. Your father was not a German citizen on the day you were born or on the day you married your mother. Your parents married after you were born but before April 1, 1953, and you therefore lost your German citizenship.
  5. Your mother/father belongs to one of the groups (1-4).

Documents required

  • Your current passport
  • Your current registration confirmation
  • Your birth certificate
  • Evidence that you belong to one of the groups of people mentioned under "Requirements" (for example, birth certificates, marriage certificates, passports or identity cards of your parents)

Please note

There are no special features.

Deadlines

The declaration must be submitted no later than August 19, 2031.

Procedure

  • Please contact the local authority responsible for you.
  • The responsible authority will inform you of the documents required.
  • You fill out the form completely and sign it.
  • You send the completed and signed form to the responsible authority.
  • The responsible authority will examine your declaration.
  • After a successful test, a notice will be issued confirming your German citizenship. If the test is negative, you will receive a rejection notice.
  • Based on a positive decision, you can apply for a German identity card and passport.
