Apply for a driver's license

To drive a motor vehicle, you need a driver's license. You can prove this with your driver's license. If you want to drive a car weighing up to 3,500 kilograms, you must apply for a Class B driver's license.

Detailed description

If you want to obtain a driver's license for the first time, you must submit an application to the driver's license authority. You can usually submit the required documents directly to your driving school, and they will take care of everything else.

With a regular Class B car driver's license, you are allowed to drive motor vehicles weighing up to 3,500 kilograms. You can also transport trailers weighing less than 750 kilograms with a Class B driver's license. To transport trailers weighing between 750 and 3,500 kg, you also need a trailer driver's license (Class BE).

Prerequisites

  • Her main residence is in Hamburg
  • You must submit your application no earlier than six months before reaching the minimum age.

Documents required

  • a valid identity card or an electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with a current registration confirmation
  • a recent biometric passport photo (35 x 45 millimeters)
  • a certificate of participation in a first aid training course
  • an eye test (not older than 2 years)
  • the appointment confirmation if the application is not submitted through the driving school

Please note

You will receive your first driving license on a probationary basis. The probationary period usually lasts two years.


The LBV-Mitte and LBV-Nord driving license offices are responsible for issuing driving licenses.


The application can be submitted before the driving school begins. The driver's license will only be issued after the exams have been passed.


Driver's licenses issued after January 19, 2013, are valid for 15 years. The 15-year limitation applies only to the document. The acquired driver's license classes remain valid (except for C and D classes).
Driver's licenses issued before January 19, 2013, must be exchanged by January 19, 2033, at the latest. Further information and deadlines can be found in the article "LBV Driver's License Exchange" under Links.

Deadlines

You must take the theory test within 12 months of receiving your documents from the driving license authority. The practical test must be taken within 12 months of passing your theory test.


Your driving license will usually be issued to you immediately after you pass the practical test.

Procedure

Once you have decided on a driving school and registered there, you can usually submit all the documents required to apply for your driver's license there. Your driving school will then take care of everything necessary and inform you about the next steps.

Processing time

The processing takes place parallel to the driving school training.

Fees

The fees range from EUR 45.90 to EUR 74.50. These fees are based on the fee schedule for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
