Prerequisites

Documents required

• a valid identity card or an electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with current confirmation of registration
• a biometric passport photo 35 x 45 millimeters
• a card index copy if the driving license was not issued in Hamburg and is still in the old paper format(the applicant can apply for the copy himself or commission the LBV to do so, although this may delay the process).

Additionally in case of theft: report to the police(for foreign reports, a translation by a sworn translator is required)

Please note

• Continuing to drive after loss or theft: After your appointment at the LBV, you may continue driving despite a lost or stolen driver's license. You can obtain a temporary paper document at your appointment at the LBV for possible police checks. Alternatively, you can also present your driver's license to the police afterward.
• Loss or theft of other vehicle documents: If you have lost other vehicle documents, please book another appointment at the registration office.
• Finding your driver's license: If you find your lost driver's license, you must hand it in to the LBV (Local Authority for Transport), as you are not allowed to have two driver's licenses at once. You can hand it in at any time at the information desk or send it by registered mail to the LBV.
• Validity of driving licenses: Driving licenses issued after January 19, 2013, are valid for fifteen years. After expiration, a new one must be issued. Driving licenses issued before January 19, 2013, must be exchanged by January 19, 2033.

Deadlines

You must apply for replacement documents as soon as possible.

Procedure

• You book an appointment online.
  • On our website for booking appointments, select the category "Driver's License"
  • Book the appointment "Application for a replacement driver's license after loss, damage or theft"
  • You will receive an email. Confirm your reservation using the link in the email.
• Bring all necessary documents and the appointment confirmation with you to your appointment at the LBV.
• Scan the QR code on your appointment confirmation using the scanner on site.
• Take a seat in the waiting area. You will be called by your call number.
• Your request will be processed on site.

Processing time

After Bundesdruckerei Berlin has issued your driving license, it will be sent to you by registered post within three to four weeks.


You also have the option of applying for an express order. The production takes a maximum of three working days. In this case, the driver's license must be collected from the LBV.

Fees

The fees are between EUR 48.00 and EUR 79.00. The exact amount of the costs can only be determined after all the documents have been submitted. An additional EUR 26.40 is charged for an express order. This is based on the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt).
