Prerequisites
- Main residence in Hamburg or the vehicle was last registered in Hamburg
- the vehicle is not registered (with seasonal license plates only possible outside the season)
- The applicant who is not resident in Germany must provide aProof of being a person registered in Hamburg who is authorized to receive the goods and who must personally present a valid identity card or passport with a current confirmation of registration
- the applicant, who does not have his or her main residence in Hamburg, can present a purchase contract that the vehicle was purchased in Hamburg
Vehicle requirements:
- EC type-approval or EC individual approval or type-approval
- General inspection report for used vehicles
- Motor vehicle liability insurance
Documents required
The following documents must be submitted for the application:
- a valid identity card or passport with current registration confirmation
- the electronic insurance confirmation for short-term license plates as an eVB code (available from the car insurance company)
- the registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration document) or registration certificate Part II (vehicle registration document) or, in the case of new vehicles, the CoC document (Certificate of Conformity) or, if applicable, the foreign registration certificate with proof of deregistration abroad and the CoC document
(A copy of the registration certificate Part I or Part II can also be submitted)
- If the person holding the vehicle is not registered in Germany: the name of a person registered in Hamburg who is authorized to receive the vehicle and who must personally present a valid identity card or passport with a current registration certificate
- a valid test certificate of the main inspection (HU) (copy sufficient) and, if applicable, proof of the safety inspection carried out for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes permissible total weight, otherwise the short-term license plate will be restricted to the direct route to the nearest testing organisation
- If the applicant does not have a primary residence in Hamburg, proof of the vehicle's location in Hamburg must be provided (e.g., a purchase contract from a Hamburg dealer).
Additionally, if an authorized representative submits the application:
- the power of attorney in the original with the legible color copy of the authorized person’s ID card
- the authorized representative's ID card in the original
Companies or associations must also submit the following documents:
- a company/association certificate with a current Hamburg address (for example, an extract from the commercial register or an extract from the association register)
If an authorized representative submits the application:
- the power of attorney in the original with the legible color copy of the authorized person’s ID card
- the authorized representative's ID card in the original
Please note
- If the vehicle does not have a valid proof of the general inspection (HU) or a valid operating license, the temporary license plate will only be issued for the direct journey to the nearest inspection organization within Hamburg.
- Short-term license plates cannot be pre-dated.
- Short-term license plates are only valid within Germany.
- Travel to the EU must be requested from the respective embassy.
- The issue of a short-term license plate is also possible for vehicles with seasonal license plates (outside the season period)
Deadlines
From the date of issue, the temporary license plate may be used on public roads for a maximum of five calendar days. The expiration date is visible on the right-hand side of the temporary license plate. After this date, the temporary license plate automatically loses its validity. Postponing it to a future date is not possible, as this would exceed the five-day expiration date.
