Detailed description

If you have moved to Hamburg from outside of Germany, you must re-register your vehicle immediately.

Moving within Hamburg:
If you move within Hamburg, you do not need to re-register your vehicle. However, you must submit your vehicle registration certificate, Part I, to the vehicle registration authority within 14 days to correct your address. You can also do this at one of the HamburgService locations at the same time as changing your address on your ID card.

Prerequisites

  • For private individuals: The registered residence is in Hamburg
  • For companies: The registered office or place of establishment of the company or trader is Hamburg
  • You do not have any motor vehicle tax debts exceeding EUR 5.00. (The calculation also takes into account late payment penalties, interest, and fines.)

Documents required

Moving from outside to Hamburg

  • Valid identity card or passport in original with current confirmation of registration
  • Company: Company certificate (e.g. extract from the commercial register, business registration or extract from the association register for registered associations)
  • Companies: Proof of the new address (e.g. the new business registration)
  • Registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document), if a change to a Hamburg license plate is desired
  • Registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document) or deregistration certificate
  • License plates, if a change to Hamburg license plates is desired
  • valid test certificate of the main inspection (HU), if a HU was already required for the first time, and if necessary, proof of the safety test and emissions test carried out
  • for the payment of the vehicle tax, an original SEPA combined mandate for the collection of the vehicle tax by direct debit
  • (If the tax is not to be paid by the owner himself but by a so-called third party willing to pay, a copy of the identity card of the third party willing to pay must be presented.)
  • Appointment confirmation
  • When changing the license plate, an electronic insurance confirmation -eVB Code- (available from the car insurance company) must also be presented.

Moving within Hamburg

  • Valid identity card or passport in original with last registration confirmation,
  • Company: Company certificate (e.g. extract from the commercial register, business registration or extract from the association register for registered associations) (not older than 3 months)
  • Companies: Proof of the new address (e.g. the new business registration)
  • Registration Certificate Part I
  • If registration certificates Part I and Part II have not yet been issued, the vehicle registration document and vehicle registration certificate must be presented
  • valid HU certificate of the last general inspection (HU)
  • Appointment confirmation

Additionally, when applying by power of attorney:

  • a legibly completed power of attorney in the original with a legible color copy of the authorized person’s ID card
  • the representative’s ID card in original

Please note

  • You may keep your license plate number. The address change will then only be reflected in your vehicle documents (registration certificate part I). Re-registration is voluntary.
  • If you don't wish to take your license plate with you, you still have the option of applying for a new license plate. Additional fees apply for personalized license plates.
  • If multiple vehicles are affected, the documents can also be submitted to the counter for commercial customers at the locations. Prior contact via kfz-zulassung@lbv.ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú is required to coordinate the next steps.
  • If your vehicle has a particulate matter sticker, it may become invalid due to new license plates. If you plan to drive in low-emission zones and don't have an exemption, you should also apply for a new particulate matter sticker when re-registering.

Deadlines

The re-registration of your vehicle must be done immediately.

Procedure

  • Book an appointment online.
    • On our website for booking appointments, select the category "Vehicle registration"
    • Then, if you are moving within Hamburg, select: "Name change / address change within Hamburg"
    • If you are moving to Hamburg from outside of Germany, select: "Transfer of a registered used vehicle" or "Transfer of a registered used vehicle and deregistration" or "Transfer of a registered used vehicle and transfer of the license plate number"
    • You will receive an email. Confirm your reservation using the link in the email.
  • Please bring all necessary documents and the appointment confirmation with you to your appointment at the LBV.
  • Scan the QR code on your appointment confirmation using the scanner on site.
  • Take a seat in the waiting area. You will be called by your call number.
  • Your request is being processed. Your vehicle is registered.

Alternatively, you can register your vehicle online using the online service Internet-based vehicle registration (i-Kfz).

Processing time

Your application will be processed directly on site.

Fees

The fee ranges from €15.90 to €60. The exact fee amount can only be determined on-site based on the submission of all required documentation. This is based on the Fee Schedule for Measures in Road Traffic (GebOSt).
