Exchange your driving license (pink/grey) for a new one at Hamburg Service

Old paper and card-based driving licenses are gradually losing their validity. If your old license expires, you will need to apply for a new one.

Detailed description

If your driver's license has expired, you must apply for a new one. Old paper and permanent card driver's licenses must be gradually exchanged for the EU card driver's license by 2033.

Your driving license will remain valid with the exchange; you will simply receive a new driver's license document. Your driver's license classes will generally remain the same. Exceptions apply to classes 2 and 3, which will change if you are over 50 years old. Further information can be found under "Please note."

In Hamburg, the State Office for Transport (LBV) is generally responsible for the exchange. However, you can also exchange your old paper driver's license at the Hamburg Service's Residents' Affairs offices. They will forward the application to the State Office for Transport (LBV).

Information

Prerequisites

  • You have a paper driving license, a permanent card driving license or an expired card driving license.
  • Her main residence is in Hamburg.
  • You submit the application in person.

Documents required

  • Your valid identification document (identity card, passport, passport substitute) and, if applicable,
    • Your eID card or
    • Your (electronic) residence permit
  • biometric passport photo
  • current driving license
  • Appointment confirmation
  • For paper driving licenses that were not issued in Hamburg: index card copy (available from the authority that issued your old driving license)

Additionally for an extension of a truck driving license of the old classes 2 and 3:

  • an ophthalmological report in accordance with Annex 6 of the Driving Licence Regulations (FeV) not older than two years
  • a medical report according to Annex 5.1 of the FeV not older than one year

If you are no longer interested in renewing your old vehicle classes and ownership rights, you do not need a certificate. You can then continue to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tons plus trailers over 3.5 tons (provided the total weight does not exceed 12 tons).

Please note

With the old Class 3 license, an extension to drive vehicles over 7.5 tons (CE 79) is no longer possible without further ado. You will receive a Class BE driver's license upon exchange.

If you wish to obtain additional driving license classes, you will need to submit additional documents. If you have been over 50 for more than five years, you will also need to take a theoretical and practical test for classes C and CE (formerly class 2). Alternatively, you can forgo class 2.
