The amount of income tax withheld from your wages depends on your tax bracket.
If you live with your spouse or life partner (hereinafter referred to as partner), you have the following options:
- both partners tax class IV
- one partner tax class III, the other tax class V
- both partners tax class IV with factor (factor method)
The so-called factor method takes into account the different income levels of both partners and ensures that the income tax is calculated as accurately as possible.
You can change your tax class several times a year. You can also switch to a less favorable tax class, for example, tax class I instead of tax class IV.
If you and your partner are permanently separated, you must notify your tax office. Starting in the year following your separation, your tax class will be changed (for example, to tax class I).
