Innovation in Space and Sound
resonanzraum (lit.: ‘resonance room’) sits inside the St. Pauli Bunker, right in the heart of the St. Pauli district, between the Heiligengeistfeld fairground and FC St. Pauli's Millerntor Stadium, surrounded by music venues and an internet radio station. With its unique architecture and acoustic design, it has been an established venue for classical and electronic music for young and urban audiences since 2014.
The team of architects from Studio PFP was responsible for the design of resonanzraum. Rotating iron gates, bare concrete walls and a spacious bar are some of the space’s standout features. The lighting concept, which was designed specifically for the room by lighting artist Heinz Kasper, is also characteristic of the venue’s contemporary artistic flair.
Ensemble Resonanz
resonanzraum is the home and testing ground of the , one of the world's leading modern chamber orchestras. The democratically organised Ensemble Resonanz is a 21-piece string orchestra without a permanent conductor. The ensemble specialises in New Music and experimental classical music, blending minimalist approaches with electronic arrangements.Â
The modern architecture of resonanzraum enables Ensemble Resonanz to open up its music to the people and merge with the pulse of the city. In cooperation with DJs and producers from Hamburg's club and electronic music scenes, the monthly concert series ‘urban string’ breaks new ground for classical music culture.
With its experimental approach of blending classical, electronic and jazz music, resonanzraum offers international artists and event organisers of all sorts an ideal stage for new and unconventional formats. Functioning like a club concept for classical concerts, the venue fills a gap in Hamburg's cultural landscape, providing a home to new audiences for classical music.
