Stories for children and teens
Running alongside Filmfest Hamburg, the MICHEL Children’s and Youth Film Festival is dedicated to audiences aged 4 to 16. International features, animations and documentaries are screened in their original languages with live German voice-over in the cinema. Young presenters introduce films, lead Q&As with guests, and involve the audience.
Active participation
Participation is central to MICHEL: children and teenagers act as moderators, interviewers and festival reporters (the MICHEL MOVIE KIDS). A seven-member children’s jury awards the MICHEL Film Award MAJA (€10,000). Special screenings for the very youngest (the short-film “Reihe für Minis”) and popular series episodes complement the programme.
International scope, local spirit
Recent editions have featured around nine competition films from countries including France, Germany, Japan, Czechia, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy and Belgium, with themes spanning friendship, family, identity, resilience and environmental action—showing how small decisions can make a big difference. Screenings are held at Studio Kino Hamburg.
