Many of the stalls at the weekly outdoor markets offer fresh regional fruit and vegetables, dairy products and meats from the rural Schleswig-Holstein and Niedersachsen areas just outside Hamburg. But if you’re looking for certified produce from local, sustainable and organic farming, the Food Lovers Markets are the places to go.

Like the regular markets, they are held on a weekly basis, but at different times and with a different variety of stalls and vendors. Give these hidden gems a try and do something good for your health and for nature.

Blankenese

Three times a week, the Blankenese outdoor market at Bahnhofstraße is a very popular traditional German market. But every Wednesday, the busy bustle turns into a quieter and more peaceful site as organic vendors take centre stage. Take your time and have a chat with the local producers about the items for sale and they will be happy to answer all of your questions.

Food Lovers Market: Wednesdays 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Regular Market: Tuesdays 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.; Fridays 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Saturdays 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Eppendorf

This weekly market for local organic and fair-trade products takes place three times a week right in the heart of Eppendorf’s main shopping area. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the stalls at Marie-Jonas-Platz square offer fresh, healthy and high-quality products from local sources. Get ready for interesting discussions about the food you are about to eat – and if you’re lucky, you may also get some advice on how to prepare your meals free with your purchase.

Food Lovers Market: Tuesdays and Thursdays 11 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Harburger Rathausplatz

A perfect complement to the regular Harburg market at Sand street with its long history and tradition, the organic farmers’ market takes place once a week at the Harburger Rathausplatz square. Every Wednesday afternoon, the market opens its stalls to visitors looking for certified organic and locally produced goods. What a nice chance to do your after-work shopping for healthy food in a socially and environmentally responsible way!

Food Lovers Market: Wednesdays 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Niendorf, Tibarg

Conveniently placed at one end of the pedestrian zone between the Tibarg shopping centre and the underground train stop U2 Niendorf Markt, this weekly market attracts a lot of visitors with its variety of stalls and various nearby cafés for ending the shopping spree. But every Friday morning, the stalls are visited by a particularly conscious crowd from Niendorf and the neighbouring quarters looking for certified organic and sustainable foodstuff and specialities.

Food Lovers Market: Fridays 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Regular Market: Thursdays and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Nienstedten

Just uphill from the Elbe river bank is the small but lovely farmers’ market at the Nienstedten Marktplatz square. Up to ten vendors meet here every Friday morning to put up their stalls and sell their locally and sustainably produced goods to environmentally conscious shoppers. Between the beautiful surroundings and the colourful fruit and vegetable stalls, there is always time to take a break and have a chat with the producers – so you always know where your food has come from.

Food Lovers Market: Fridays 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Ottensen

Despite being the smallest of the municipal markets in Altona, the farmers' market at Spritzenplatz square in lively and multi-cultural Ottensen hosts the full variety of goods of a traditional farmers' market. It is held on four days every week, while every Wednesday and Saturday it boasts certified organic and sustainable produce as part of the Food Lovers Market.

Food Lovers Market: Wednesdays 12 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., and Saturdays 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Regular Market: Tuesdays 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., and Fridays 8 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Rahlstedt

Three times a week, the square in front of the Rahlstedt station fills with shoppers hungry for local produce. Many regulars gather here at Rahlstedter Bahnhofstraße, which partly explains the popularity of this diverse market. Every Thursday, the market features stalls that specialise in certified organic and sustainably produced fruit and vegetables, local dairy products and much more.

Food Lovers Market: Thursdays 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Regular Market: Wednesdays and Saturdays 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

St. Georg

Amidst modern cafés, bars and restaurants, the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Platz square in Hamburg’s central St. Georg neighbourhood turns into a grocery shopper’s El Dorado twice a week. On Thursday mornings, there is a snug regular market with about eight stalls covering the visitors’ weekly needs for foodstuff and chit-chat. But every Friday afternoon the producers of certified organic and sustainable goods put up their stalls – the perfect way for residents and local businesspeople to spend the after-work hours shopping for healthy food and start the weekend with a clear conscience.

Food Lovers Market: Fridays 2 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Regular Market: Thursdays 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Winterhude

The weekly outdoor market at Winterhuder Marktplatz is small but conveniently located between the banks of the Alster river and Stadtpark. Three times a week, grocery shoppers frequent the market to find everything they need, from fruit and vegetables, bread and pastries, dairy products, meats and fish to colourful flowers. On every Friday afternoon, the regular market stalls give way to local vendors specialising in organic and sustainable produce. Do yourself and the environment a favour and pick up some local and organic fruit and veg for your next after-work picnic in the park or on the river banks.

Organic Farmers’ Market: Fridays 2:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Regular market: Wednesdays 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Saturdays 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.
