Gudrun Garke

A Festival of Cultural Resonance

With over 200,000 visitors in recent years, altonale has become a cornerstone of Hamburg’s cultural calendar. In 2025, the festival returns under the theme ā€˜Resonance’, inviting artists and audiences alike to explore how resonance arises – in art, in society, and in human connection.

Now in its 26th year, altonale continues to stand for active participation, community engagement and the promotion of democratic values, all brought to life through a wide-ranging cultural programme.

What to Expect

Spread across nearly 40,000 square metres, the events take place at a variety of indoor and outdoor locations throughout Altona, often in unexpected or unconventional venues. At the centre of it all is the festival hub on Platz der Republik, where a lively and inclusive programme will be presented throughout the festival’s duration.

Admission: Pay What You Want

True to its inclusive ethos, altonale continues to embrace the ā€˜pay what you want’ model. While some events may require prior registration or a ticket, most allow visitors to decide for themselves how much they are able and willing to pay. More information about the ā€˜make it possible’ initiative can be found on the festival’s official website.Ā
