Science on Tap

Sip a drink and dive into cutting-edge research as scientists take over Hamburg’s pubs for one lively evening of discovery.

Pull Up a Stool for Science

What if your next pint came with a side of particle physics? Wissen vom Fass (literally “Science on Tap”) brings science out of the lab and into the pub, as researchers from across Hamburg swap white coats for bar stools to share their work in an informal and engaging setting. Organised by DESY and the University of Hamburg, and supported by local research clusters and strategic partnerships, this free event transforms dozens of bars and pubs into stages for short, accessible science talks—covering everything from quantum physics and climate change to ancient civilisations and social identity.

Whether you're curious about how to photograph an electron, what cuneiform tablets reveal about life 5,000 years ago, or whether the sound of your voice can indicate your sexuality, there's something to spark your interest. With over 50 venues featured in previous years—including favourites like Pony Bar, Bar Eldorado and Landgang Brewery—Wissen vom Fass offers a refreshing way to engage with science over your favourite drink. Just turn up, find a seat, and get ready to learn something new.
