Bird-Themed Costume Ball

Vogelball

In Wilhelmsburg quarter, the Vogelball takes place once annually to celebrate summer and living life free as a bird.

Pablo Heimplatz

Visitors of Vogelball are sure to feel free as a bird for at least one night a year. If you expect strict dress codes and step sequences, you’re mistaken. Instead, letting loose and dancing the night away to electronic music under the stars is just one thing that makes this ball special. More striking still is the theme: thousands of party-goers don their prettiest plumage and dress up as colourful birds. Imagination knows no limit, as long as the costumes are creative, pompous and feathery. First you run into a small flock of birdlike creatures and while approaching the southern tip of Wilhelmsburg island, feathered figured slowly outnumber humans.

The area on the canals of Hamburg’s vast port area is home to one of the region’s most-celebrated music festivals: the MS Dockville, which takes place shortly after Vogelball. Andthe MS Artville is an almost month-long open air art exhibition that happens around Vogelball. Traditionally, the ball takes place on the same day as the grand Christopher Street Day parade, contributing to the fact, that Vogelball is also a much-loved happening for Hamburg's vibrant queer community. And if all this wasn’t enough, the area also offers a first-rate treat for hip-hop fans, too: parallel to Vogelball, the Spektrum Festival is held on the same day. Combi-tickets are available to all who wish to explore both events. Talk about two birds and one stone.
