A Day in Hamburg’s Wildest District
Since its premiere in 2003, Heiße Ecke – Das St. Pauli Musical has become a true Hamburg institution. Written and produced by Corny Littmann and his creative team at Schmidts Tivoli, the show takes place over the course of a single day at the legendary snack bar “Heiße Ecke”, where the lives of locals, tourists, partygoers and night-workers intersect. Nine performers slip into more than fifty roles to tell stories of love, loss, laughter and survival — all accompanied by catchy songs and that unmistakable St Pauli humour.
Audiences are treated to a fast-paced and deeply human portrait of the Reeperbahn’s “normal madness”: from streetwise barmaids and cheeky sailors to starry-eyed visitors looking for adventure. With its blend of bold wit and big heart, Heiße Ecke captures the essence of life on Germany’s most famous mile — raw, emotional and irresistibly entertaining.
A Love Letter to St Pauli
What began as a local insider tip has turned into a long-running success story, with over 2.9 million visitors and more than 5,500 performances. Critics hailed the musical as “a love letter to St Pauli” — “charming and sexy, lascivious and honest” (Hamburger Abendblatt). Its creative trio — Martin Lingnau (music), Heiko Wohlgemuth (lyrics) and Thomas Matschoß (book) — have crafted a production that feels as alive and unpredictable as the district itself. Every performance is infused with warmth, local dialect and the distinctive rhythm of Hamburg’s nightlife.
St Pauli and the Spirit of Hamburg
St Pauli has long been the beating heart of Hamburg’s counter-culture — once a rough portside quarter, later a magnet for artists, sailors, musicians and rebels. The Reeperbahn grew into a world-famous entertainment strip of theatres, clubs and neon lights. It’s also where The Beatles honed their early sound, making it an enduring symbol of freedom, grit and creativity.
Heiße Ecke reflects all these layers — celebrating the humour, humanity and contradictions that make St Pauli so unique. In doing so, the musical has become not just entertainment but part of Hamburg’s living history: a show about the city, for the city, and loved by audiences from all over the world.
